About Region Display
First of all, Region Display is free. I put it in the public domain, as I give up any copyright on it.
Region Display is a very small DVD that will display your player region settings, as they may be queried by movies.
You might wonder: "why such a complicated way to display the current region? Why not use existing utilities?"
Here’s why:
Some movies are protected against so-called region-free players by "sophisticated" schemes. These are "smart discs", "RCE" or whatever the marketing hype calls them. They all work the same way: the movie queries the player’s region flags, and plays differently according to these flags. As it works the same way (it queries the player, then displays the replied region), Region Display may be used to check the player software for accurate region setting reply. Region Display will not allow circumventing any region protection scheme. Region Display is informational only.
Note that although I am a Mac user, Region Display is useful to anyone. If you are a PC user, simply ignore Mac specific sections below. You can even use Region Display with your home set, if you can burn it to an appropriate medium. It can be used by DVD player resellers to check the compatibility level of any given player.
Region Display comes in two different flavors, PAL and NTSC. Be sure to pick the one you need. They differ by the video format only. Region Display was built to be as little as possible, so it will make a reasonable sized archive, small enough to download by modem-connected users.
------------------
How does Region Display work?
Region Display is a DVD standard compliant movie that is playable in every region. That is, its eight region flags are all set to "authorized".
When played, Region Display queries the player’s region setting using the standard DVD virtual machine register. It then displays different screens, depending on the replied value.
Some region-free players automatically switch their region according to the inserted medium. Some do it by simply copying the movie’s authorization flags; this results in a player that will belong to multiple regions. Some others do it by choosing a preferred region among the movie’s list, and this results in a player that is unable to belong to regions that aren’t the preferred region. And then some simply don’t check the movie’s authorization flags (they are sometimes called region 0 players, an inexact term).
Error free playback of RCE protected movies or smart discs requires your player to belong to one and only one region, and that region must match the movie’s one. Region Display allows you to check (and again, only to check) your player by reporting the region it belongs to, exactly the same way RCE or smart discs check it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to use Region Display
The REGION_DISPLAY_PAL.iso (or REGION_DISPLAY_NTSC.iso) file is a platform independent ready-to-burn disc image; all you have is to burn (a.k.a. toast) it on a blank medium. If your player supports playing movies from a CD (Apple DVD Player does), you may use an inexpensive CD-R instead of a DVD-R.
Warning 1: Region Display heavily relies on DVD’s menus and scripts so don’t play the .VOB files directly, as this does not allow for processing the mandatory menu and script information contained in the movie. I repeat: don’t play the .VOB files! Play Region Display as a full movie, using a genuine DVD player.
Warning 2: (Mac OS Classic Only) Only DVDs played from a source that is registered with the DVD Region Manager will give you useful information. On Mac OS, only CD and DVD drives handled by the Apple CD/DVD driver are Region Manager aware. That is, if you play the movie from the mounted image (using DVD Extractor or Toast), directly from the files (using the "Open VIDEO_TS" menu), or from a CD player that isn’t recognized by the Apple’s CD/DVD driver (e.g. a CD recorder that requires Toast’s driver), the player will default to region 1 and Region Display will display this default value, giving you no useful indication.
You should use Region Display exactly as if it was a protected movie, intended to be played in a single region.
If your DVD drive is region locked, you have no choice but to check that your player returns the appropriate region.
If your DVD drive is region free, you should check that for every region you set your player to, it will report the same one. That is, you should play it 6 (or 7, or 8) times, changing your player’s region each time. So, set your player to region 1, and then play Region Display. Check that it displays "Status: Good, Region 1". Then set your player to region 2, and then play Region Display. Check that it displays "Status: Good, Region 2". Repeat the operation for every other region your player supports, that is, regions 3, 4, 5, 6 and maybe 7 and 8. Mac OS 9 Apple’s DVD software only supports regions 1 to 6. Mac OS X supports all 8 regions.
Please note that some DVD players may cache the playback state of a movie, so that, even if you change the player’s region, Region Display may display the same region again and again. Please take the appropriate steps to clear the cache before playing Region Display twice in a row if you changed the region in between. On Mac OS, this can be achieved by doing the following: press twice on the remote control’s "Stop" button, press the "Eject" button, quit Apple DVD Player, change the region, insert Region Display movie again, then launch Apple DVD Player again.
From all of the above, you may infer that only DVD players whose region may manually be set are 100% RCE-safe. Of course, most users are happy with 99%.

Understanding what Region Display reports
When played, the movie title is displayed, followed by one or more screens:
The "Status: Bad, No Region" screen is displayed when the player replied that it belongs to no region. This is an illegal reply and indicates a buggy player.
The "Status: Bad, All Regions" screen is displayed when the player replied that it belongs to all regions simultaneously. This is also an illegal reply and indicates a buggy player.
The "Status: Bad, Multiple Regions" screen is displayed when the player replied that it belongs to two regions or more. This is, again, an illegal reply and indicates a buggy player. The different regions it belongs to are displayed at the bottom of the screen, each in turn.
The "Status: Good, Region n" screen is displayed when the player replied that it belongs only to region n. A valid player belongs to one and only one region. Of course, the region displayed must match the real one (i.e. the drive’s region if it’s region-locked, or else the region you set with Region (on Mac) or DVD Genie (on PC) - or any similar utility).
If Region Display displays the "Status: Bad" message, you will have trouble playing RCE movies. Your player should be RCE-safe if and only if it displays "Status: Good" and the region your player is set to.
Warning: The screen should not stay still for more than five seconds. If it does, the player probably doesn’t honor menu timeouts. If so, press "Enter" on the remote control to display the next screen (menus were extensively used in Region Display to keep it small, although they don’t look like menus).
